1929 $5 MS64 NGC....
Description
1929 Half Eagle, MS64
Few Pieces Known Finer
1929 $5 MS64 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck half eagles
in 1929 for the first time since that facility's 1915 production,
and it was the first coinage of half eagles at any mint since the
1916 San Francisco issue. The 1929 was struck to the extent of
662,000 coins, but few of these coins were ever released into
commercial channels. By 1933, most of the mintage remained in
government vaults and was melted down. Only several hundred coins
escaped destruction, and these are highly sought after today,
representing one of the most difficult acquisitions for series
collectors. This Choice example displays bright yellow-gold satin luster and a bold strike, with minimal abrasions. A few marks in the lower left obverse field near stars 2 and 3 will serve as pedigree markers. Overall eye appeal pleases nicely. Census: 71 in 64 (2 in 64+, 1 in 64+★ ), 7 finer (8/25).(Registry values: N4719)
