    Description

    1929 Half Eagle, In-Demand MS64
    Seldom Seen in Higher Grades

1929 $5 MS64 PCGS. The last issue in the Indian Head half eagle series, the 1929 was struck after a hiatus of some 16 years (since the 1916-S issue) and is decidedly among the most curious as well, struck during the year the Great Depression began and only four years before the Gold Recall of 1933. The majority of survivors are in AU to lower Mint State grades and are among the few that escaped melting, a fate most examples are believed to have met in 1934. (Walter Breen nonetheless mentions in his Complete Encyclopedia a complete Uncirculated roll of 20 coins that remained in private hands until 1978.) Properly graded MS64 examples are quite rare, and no examples to date are certified finer than MS65.

The apricot-gold surfaces of this Choice Mint State coin boasts much eye appeal and an excellent strike. Trivial marks appear on the Indian's eyelid and the feather behind, at the curve of the neck, and around the motto on the reverse. Another plus in this coin's favor: It lacks the curious indented arc paralleling the edge that many examples show. PCGS reports only six examples in MS64+ and 10 in MS65 finer (7/16).
