    Description

    1929 Half Eagle, MS64
    Heavily Melted in the 1930s

1929 $5 MS64 PCGS. This is a beautiful near-Gem example of the famous final issue in the Indian half eagle series. The 1929 had a mintage of 662,000 pieces, but large quantities were never distributed into circulation. By the late 1920s, gold coinage was large unused in the eastern economy serviced by the Philadelphia Mint, and the crash of the stock market in 1929 further reduced the likelihood that gold coins in bank and government vaults would ever be distributed to the public. Less than four years later in 1933, when President Roosevelt by Executive Order mandated a recall of government-issued gold coinage, most of the 1929 half eagle's mintage was easily withdrawn from banks and destroyed.

The date survives primarily in Mint State grades, since it never experienced widespread circulation. The typical piece grades MS62 to MS64, but examples at the upper end of this range are in high demand. A few Gems exist but are far out of reach even for many well-heeled collectors. This near-Gem displays frosty yellow-gold luster and a bold strike. There is no trace of high-point friction, and the coin offers lovely, mostly unmarked surfaces. PCGS has seen 10 finer submissions (3/17).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 28E2, PCGS# 8533)
