Description
1929 Indian Half Eagle, Unc Details
Coveted Melt Rarity
1929 $5 -- Reverse Repaired -- NGC Details. Unc. Ex:
Manhattan Collection. Choice straw-gold surfaces grace the obverse
of this final-year 1929 Indian half eagle, although the reverse is
hairlined throughout the reverse fields masking a repair (or
repairs) no longer visible. Both sides are well-struck and the
repair work requires magnification to view the full extent of
smoothing around the eagle. Most 1929 half eagles were melted
during the 1930s Gold Recall despite the large 662,000-piece
mintage. Few of these coins were released into circulation,
speaking to a lack of demand for the five dollar gold denomination
in commerce. The low commercial demand was nothing new, causing
half eagles to disappear from Mint production for more than a
decade prior to the 1929 issue.
