Description

1908 Indian Head Half Eagle, MS66+
CAC Approved, Glistening Mint Luster

1908 $5 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The novelty of Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head and perched eagle design in 1908 prompted many people to preserve nice Mint State examples of the first-year issue. Aside from the high-mintage 1909-D, no other Indian five is as available in Uncirculated condition. However, the availability of this issue plummets in MS66, where it is decidedly rare and is highly sought-after by type collectors. The Condition Census is made up of one MS68 coin, one MS67+, and five MS67s, PCGS and NGC populations combined. Barely outside the top tier are four MS66+ pieces -- two each PCGS and NGC -- one of which is offered here (10/18).

Frosty yellow-gold luster glistens with tints of mint-green and rose on each side, while the design elements showcase sharp definition and the fields have only the most unobtrusive signs of contact. Eye appeal is outstanding. This first-year Indian Head five is an almost unimprovable type coin. Population: 22 in 66 (2 in 66+), 3 finer. CAC: 11 in 66, 1 finer (10/18).(Registry values: N7079)
