Description

1908 Quarter Eagle, MS66+ CAC
Debut of the Indian Design

1908 $2 1/2 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Donald A. Kutz. The Philadelphia Mint struck 564,821 1908-dated quarter eagles that marked the beginning of the Bela Lyon Pratt-designed Indian quarter eagles. These distinctive coins departed from the traditional coinage design that featured devices raised above the field. Instead, the raised design was set below the field on the Indian quarter eagles and half eagles that are sometimes incorrectly called incuse. The style was unpopular at the time these coins were struck, but later gained popularity among collectors who learned to appreciate the style and understand the condition rarity of the series. PCGS has graded just 400 examples in MS66 or MS67 grades for the entire series from 1908 to 1929. This exceptional beauty has satin luster and an absence of marks on its brilliant harvest-gold surfaces. PCGS has certified nine examples graded MS66+ and five finer submissions that all grade MS67. CAC: 23 in 66, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N4719)
