Description
1908 Quarter Eagle, MS66+ CAC
None Certified Finer by CAC
1908 $2 1/2 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. The new Indian quarter eagle
was struck with Bela Pratt's unique sunken relief design, prompted
by a request of President Teddy Roosevelt, continuing with the
redesign of American coinage following Augustus Saint-Gaudens'
death in 1907. The President felt as though high relief coins would
be better for meeting the wishes of bankers and would be both
artistically novel as well as highly desirable. He was somewhat
inspired by ancient Grecian coinage, though by the time Pratt's
quarter eagle design was put into production in 1908, new
difficulties producing the recessed design on both sides of a coin
came to light. Eventually, the Mint would produce the coins that
met the standard of the President, but the public was not nearly as
receptive to the new quarter eagle as he had thought. This example displays rich Midas-gold luster that has deepening notes of orange and lighter silver notes that grace the devices. The piece is well struck with just a minute abrasion that proves negligible to the coin's eye appeal. The issue becomes rare beyond Premium Gem, but none are endorsed finer by CAC like the current example (3/26).(Registry values: N4719)
