    1909 Quarter Eagle, MS66
    Sharp Detail, Vivid Orange-Gold Luster

1909 $2 1/2 MS66 PCGS. Premium Gem, the preservation level of this magnificent coin, is the finest grade in which the 1909 quarter eagle can be acquired and is also a tremendously difficult grade tier to access. The novelty to the public of Pratt's new design had subsided by the end of 1908, with the result that the 1909 issue was not nearly as well-saved in high grade. This plummet in collector interest at the time of issue is blatantly apparent in the fantastic drop off of the modern-day Premium Gem population between the 1908 and 1909 issues.

The sharpness of strike stands out on this example. The headdress feathers show excellent detail, as does the eagle's plumage, including that of the shoulder. The surfaces are exceptionally lustrous, showing attractive apricot-gold patina laced with whispers of mint-green. An inoffensive hair-thin mark to the left of the Indian's neck is noted solely for accuracy. Population: 19 in 66, 0 finer (10/15).
