Fully Struck 1911-D Quarter Eagle, AU Details

1911-D $2 1/2 --Improperly Cleaned--NGC. AU Details. The introduction of third-party grading services more than two decades ago solved an age-old numismatic problem. Counterfeit 1911-D quarter eagles and counterfeits of many other important key date coins, such as the 1909-S VDB cent in particular, were frequently seen before the grading services began operations. Almost immediately, NGC and PCGS, as well as other services, began spotting counterfeit coins and took steps to eliminate them from the marketplace. Today, the best anticounterfeit technique is simply to purchase coins that have third-party endorsements. Genuine third-party certified coins provide the collector with the best defense against counterfeiting.
This piece shows a high wire rim around the right side of the obverse, a characteristic seen on all authentic 1911-D quarter eagles. The mintmark is especially bold on this example, and the surfaces show only slight evidence of cleaning. This piece would fit comfortably in many Uncirculated sets of Indian quarter eagles.(Registry values: N2998)
