    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS63
    Clean and Sharply Struck

1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. CAC. The 1911-D quarter eagle, key to the Indian Head series, has such a unique surface texture that seasoned numismatists often can spot examples without looking at the date and mintmark. The luster has a granular quality that is generally coarser than that found on the 1914-D quarter eagle. Mike Fuljenz, in the recently released (2010) Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century, calls the luster "a combination of granular and frosty." The strike is usually excellent on the issue. Most examples tend to the orange-gold or yellow-gold range of the spectrum; greenish-gold examples are seen less often. (This piece tends more to the orange-gold end of the color spectrum.) The wire rim from 1 to 5 o'clock on the obverse is diagnostic, and some examples show a weak mintmark. The mintmark on this piece is strong and easily seen without a loupe, and the wire rim on the obverse is especially pronounced. Numerous small abrasions are scattered over each side, but none are singularly notable.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
