    Select 1911-D Quarter Eagle
    Low-Mintage Key

1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. The 1911-D quarter eagle and the 1909-O half eagle are considered the key coins in their respective series. But despite the superficial similarity--both are mintmarked, low-mintage gold coins in new series introduced early in the 20th century--in most ways they are a study in contrasts. The 1909-O five dollar was an anachronism produced at the decrepit New Orleans Mint, the last gasp of an antebellum Southern facility that had been in varying states of dangerous disrepair for decades. The 1911-D quarter eagle was produced at the Denver Mint, completed in 1906 and a vibrant, young Western mint. Several other Indian Head half eagles are even more difficult in higher grades than the 1909-O, but the 1911-D quarter eagle is the only coin in that series that is truly elusive in MS63 or finer condition. Finally, the 1909-O half eagle is challenging to locate with good eye appeal, while the 1911-D quarter eagles generally are found well struck and with good luster. The present coin is well detailed, with bright orange and rose-gold surfaces. A most attractive representative of this key date.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
