    1911-D Two and a Half, MS63
    Lustrous and Well Struck

1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. The low-mintage key 1911-D quarter eagle is always available for a price, but it is an issue that is not without its own unique challenges. The primary challenge is locating an authentic piece, the presence of phonies underscoring need for third-party authentication and grading. The second area of concern for the collector of this short series is to find a coin with a reasonably strong strike, especially in the area of the mintmark. This bright, lustrous, orange-gold example is just such a strongly struck piece with a complete, well-formed mintmark. It also has a high, raised wire rim on the right side of the obverse, one of the hallmarks of a genuine coin. The surfaces show remarkably few abrasions, the only ones of note in the field in front of the Indian's nose and below the O in OF. A pleasing example of this challenging, low-mintage issue.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
