Key 1911-D Indian Quarter Eagle, MS63
    A B. Max Mehl Favorite

1911-D $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. The Indian quarter eagle series contains only three mintmarked dates, and the 1911-D is first and foremost among them. The 1911-D boasts the smallest mintage of the series, at 55,680 pieces, and the date is just as elusive as the tiny mintage would suggest. B. Max Mehl recognized the importance of the 1911-D at an early date, and his enthusiastic descriptions in several auction catalogs established the issue as the undisputed key to the series.
The present coin is an attractive Select specimen, well detailed, with just a little softness on the central devices. The mintmark is distinct and well formed, but not deeply impressed. The lustrous surfaces exhibit pleasing orange-gold color, with some light green highlights. the visual appeal is quite strong.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
