    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS64
Sharp Example of This Key Date

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. At Heritage we are privileged to offer a range of 1911-D quarter eagles in varying grades at practically every Signature auction we conduct. This spurred our curiosity to conduct a survey concerning the total number of submissions at each service, and the average grade of those "grading events." As of March 2014, PCGS has seen 3,286 submissions of the Strong D variety, and there are 5,131 submissions at NGC, together with an average grade of "MS58.7." Obviously those are not all separate coins; the number of duplicates/resubmissions in those nearly 8,000-plus grading events is likely in the hundreds or low thousands. Even so, it becomes clear that large numbers of certified survivors cluster in the AU58 and MS62 grade levels, in particular, concordant with our own experience.

This MS64 NGC example is far finer than the usual survivor, showing original greenish-gold color throughout with the prominent wire rim around the upper obverse. The mintmark is bold and the chieftain's cheek and brow, as well as the eagle's forward wing area and other exposed bits, are free of mentionable contact. Both the headdress and wing feathers are well-detailed. A great example of this key date.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
