    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS64
    Exceptionally Sharp and Clean Example

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. There are a number of factors that make the 1911-D the most desirable single coin in the Indian Head quarter eagle series. It has the lowest circulation-strike mintage by a large margin (55,680 pieces versus 240,000 for the 1914), it is the first Indian Head quarter eagle to be produced at a mint other Philadelphia, and according to Mike Fuljenz, it has the highest overall rarity of all 15 issues in the series.

The 1911-D is usually very well struck, though some examples possess an extremely weak D mintmark. Such pieces usually trade at a discount compared to pieces on which the mintmark is sharply defined, such as seen here. The surface texture typically seen on this issue is often granular, and the overall luster often a bit subdued. Many 1911-Ds have mint-made copper spots; more so on the reverse, and most reveal scattered abrasions. Those latter attributes are refreshingly absent on this piece. The surfaces are exceptionally clean, the strike is as close to complete as possible, and the color is a muted golden-tan. This is one of the finest MS64 examples we have seen in recent memory.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
