    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS64+
    Seldom Offered This Fine

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Strong D. The 1911-D is the undisputed key to the Indian quarter eagle series due to its low mintage of only 55,600 coins, but its actual rarity is something of an uncertainty when one stops and studies this issue. The certified population reports suggest that middle-grade Mint State pieces should be fairly available. Yet, the rate of auction appearances in the MS63 and finer levels is significantly lower than would normally be expected. In Gem, the 1911-D is offered at auction no more than once or twice a year, even though nearly 100 examples are reported in that grade by PCGS and NGC. Two factors contribute to this anomaly. One, many of the higher-grade coins reported by the grading services are actually duplicated submissions of previously graded coins, and two, those that do exist in MS63 or better are largely held by strong hands or are traded privately. With a series as popular as the Indian quarter eagle, dates that would otherwise be considered scarce, become conditionally rare when the demand outweighs the supply. This also affects the 1914 and 1914-D in Gem condition.

This is a boldly struck, attractive example, just falling short of an MS65 grade. The bronze-gold surfaces show the characteristically granular luster of the 1911-D and the upper-right obverse rim shows a high knife edge, as expected. The mintmark is bold. A couple faint grazes on the Indian's cheek are all that limit the grade. PCGS has seen 24 finer submissions (6/15).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
