    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS64+
    Beautifully Preserved Strong D Example

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. Strong D. The 1911-D is the biggest prize of the Indian quarter eagle series in Gem condition, being far rarer in that grade than the certified population reports suggest. As a result, such coins are far out of reach financially for most collectors, even if an example can be located. Gems are rarely offered at public auction.

Over the past two decades, we have handled approximately 130 MS64 examples, although only eight of those were Plus-designated. Recent auction realizations for Plus-graded PCGS coins with CAC green labels have surpassed $25,000 at auction. This example is one of the finest we have seen. The obverse would grade MS65 all by itself, although there are a few stray lines in the reverse field behind the eagle's head that reduce PCGS' assessment to "just" MS64+. A loupe reveals a tiny planchet void in front of the Indian's nose. The strike is sharp, and the mintmark is clear. PCGS officially reports 26 finer examples (3/17).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
