1911-D Two and a Half Indian, MS64
Sought-After Key Date

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Strong D. In his 1911 Annual Report, Mint Director George Evan Roberts recommended that the quarter eagle denomination be abolished by congress, referencing the lack of commercial demand for the coin, its small size, and the nuisance of quarter eagle coinage flowing out of circulation and back to the Treasury throughout the fiscal year. The only reigning demand for the coin at the time was as Christmas gifts around the holiday season.

The 1911-D quarter eagle's small mintage of 55,680 pieces directly reflects this lack of demand at the branch mints, standing in stark contrast to the high annual productions of the coins at Philadelphia. Moreover, only two pairs of dies were prepared for Denver coinage of the denomination, anticipating the low production. Oddly, the Annual Report assigns those four dies to the San Francisco Mint, but since no quarter eagles were struck at San Francisco, it is likely a clerical error and the dies were those shipped to Denver.

This Choice 1911-D displays bold sharpness and lustrous orange-gold surfaces with faint lilac overtones. A few light field marks are all that deny full Gem classification, and the eye appeal is excellent.(Registry values: N7079)
