    Near-Gem 1911-D Quarter Eagle

1911-D $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. The rarest and most valuable quarter eagle in the Indian Head series. Numismatists failed to appreciate the issue when it was released. The small mintage of 55,680 pieces was somehow overlooked, and few pieces were saved at the time of release. Perhaps this is not so strange, since collecting U.S. gold coins by date and mintmark did not become truly popular until the 1940s. Today the Indian Head quarter eagle type is avidly collected, and this issue is universally acknowledged as the key to the series.
Most survivors of the 1911-D are in lower Uncirculated grades. The mintmark is often weak, and abrasions in the fields limit the grade on many coins. There is a diagnostic partial wire rim on the upper right obverse of all known examples.
The present example reveals only the most minute ticks on the Indian's cheek that limit a finer grade, but the exposed fields elsewhere reveal no mentionable distractions. The rich amber-gold coloration and bold mintmark will be other pluses for collectors. Certified in a green-label holder.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
