Description

Gem 1911-D Quarter Eagle
Important High-Grade Key to This Widely Collected Series

1911-D $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. In Gem condition, the 1911-D is an important condition rarity in the 20th century gold coinage arena. The clean surfaces, sharp strike, and exceptional luster required for the assignment of an MS65 grade are all present on this example. Although some will point to the combined population of NGC and PCGS as an indication that true Gems should always be available, quite the opposite is actually the case. While population data of the two grading services suggest that nearly 100 MS65 or finer pieces have been certified, the reality is that a large number of resubmissions over 20 years have substantially inflated the true data. In all instances of a large price jump from one grade to the next, resubmissions of the lower-grade examples tend to increase in a direct relationship.
An examination of the individual quality characteristics reveal the importance of this piece. Both sides have pristine surfaces that are hardly marred by any marks. The number of blemishes on each side is so small that they can actually be counted with the aid of magnification. The strike is bold with the cheek fully rounded and the headdress sharply detailed. Every individual feather detail on the reverse is intricately defined. Most important is the mintmark, as bold as any we have seen. The surfaces are highly lustrous with impressive frosty brilliance. Both sides have lovely lemon-yellow color framed by a ring of deeper honey-gold along the borders. Census: 81 in 65 (1 in 65+), 2 finer (8/12).
