Description
1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS66+ CAC
Low-Mintage Series Key
Finest-Certified Example
1911-D $2 1/2 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Donald A. Kutz. Strong D.
From a series-low mintage of 55,680 pieces, the 1911-D Indian
quarter eagle is by far the most famous and elusive issue of the
popular series. Gold specialist David Akers noted:"The 1911-D is one of those few issues in the Gold series which 'has it all going for it.' The lowest mintage of the series, the rarest [quarter eagle] of its design in Mint State, the second rarest in MS65, the first Denver Quarter-Eagle emission in American history, and a level of reputation throughout the entire Numismatic Community are factors which jointly combine to make the 1911-D a very popular item."
The 1911-D was the first quarter eagle struck at the Denver Mint, with the first coins delivered on April 18, 1911. Perhaps surprisingly, the issue was not widely saved at the time of issue, making the 1911-D even more elusive in high grade than the small production total would suggest. The elusive nature of this issue was largely overlooked by collectors until the 1950s, but it is universally acknowledged today. Heritage Auctions is privileged to present the finest-certified example of this 20th-century gold rarity in this important offering.
The present coin is a truly spectacular example, not just for an '11-D but for any Indian quarter eagle. The fields are nearly flawless with only the most minute abrasions present (strong magnification will be required). The striking details are fully brought up in all areas except the lowest feather of the headdress, as usual for business strikes of this type. The mintmark is especially sharp and worthy of note. A thin fin, or wire rim, is evident around much of the obverse. The mint luster is smooth and satiny with an overlay of incredible rose-gold and lilac coloration that gives this coin a really distinctive appearance. Overall eye appeal is outstanding and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. This finest-certified example is sure to be eagerly sought after by series specialists and Registry Set enthusiasts. This coin is pictured on PCGS CoinFacts and is the first coin in their Condition Census. Population: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 66, 0 finer (11/24).
