    1911-D Two and a Half, MS63
    Strong D, Strong Definition Overall

1911-D $2 1/2 Strong D MS63 PCGS. CAC. Two of the most interesting and appealing characteristics of the Indian Head quarter eagle set are its relatively small, collectible size -- only 15 issues spanning the 1908-1929 timeframe -- and the existence of a sole key to the series, the 1911-D. We have tried to think of another series that has attributes similar to this set, and cannot think of another. Most other U.S. coin series either have many more members overall, or they have multiple keys in many cases.

Of course, being able to actually complete a set of American gold from the "classic era" of U.S. numismatics -- assuming one can find a nice, acceptable 1911-D -- is also part of the appeal of finishing the Indian Head quarter eagle collection. This is an especially attractive example of this important 20th century issue. The mintmark is clearly defined on all sides, with none of the blobbiness often seen. Strike details are strong in other areas with notably bold definition on the lowest feather in the headdress and top of the eagle's wing. Each side is minimally abraded, and there is a slight, even accent of reddish patina with yellow-gold glowing beneath.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
