    Near-Gem 1911-D Strong D Quarter Eagle
    Remarkably Strong Strike Overall

1911-D $2 1/2 Strong D MS64 PCGS. The 1911-D quarter eagle was a small-mintage and low-survival issue, as has been noted many times, but the survival is further muddied by the existence of many Weak D examples in the marketplace. On some pieces the mintmark is so weak that it is nearly impossible to see with the naked eye, and yet the diagnostic wire rim from 1 to 5 o'clock on the obverse serves as authentication. While these coins are true 1911-Ds, they certainly bring less in the marketplace. Most collectors prefer to buy a nice 1911-D with a Strong D mintmark. In fact, Mike Fuljenz writes in his series reference that "it is our strong belief that since this is the key issue in the Indian Head Quarter Eagle set the collector should stretch and try to buy the nicest example that is feasible. An otherwise unexceptional set can be made very desirable with the addition of a very nice 1911-D."

This coin is remarkable for its completeness of strike in all areas, not just the mintmark. The feathers in the headdress are complete as are the feathers at the top of the eagle's wing. But the star of the show is the D, which is fully popped up from the surrounding field. Otherwise, the mint luster is bright and satiny, and there are no singularly mentionable marks on either side.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 7KR7, PCGS# 7943)
