    Description

    1911-D Quarter Eagle, MS64
    Strong Mintmark, Clean Surfaces

1911-D $2 1/2 Strong D MS64 PCGS. The 1911-D quarter eagle actually has more in common with the 1909-O half eagle in the Indian Head series than with the 1911-D half eagle. Both are the leading rarities in their series, and each was the first mintmarked issue with their respective sets. Each also appeared to be a one-off at the time, even though Denver struck later quarter eagle issues in 1914 and 1925, while New Orleans would cease operation later in 1909.

For most collectors, if they could choose but a single key to those two gold series, they would choose the 1911-D for the quarter eagle and 1909-O for the half eagle, two key coins whose popularity appears to be perennial. As indicated on the insert, the mintmark is indeed strong, but so are the rest of the design elements on each side, certainly not a given on the 1911-D. The mint luster sparkles with a soft, satiny texture over the unusually clean surfaces.
