    Description

    1914-D Indian Quarter Eagle, MS65
    Notably Scarce in High Grades

1914-D $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. The 1911-D and the 1914-D have long been regarded as the keys to the Indian quarter eagle series, because of their low mintage and their scarcity even in lower grades. At the MS65 level, however, the 1914-D emerges as a notable condition rarity. Just 43 pieces have achieved the Gem grade at NGC, with a single MS67 coin finer (12/15), significantly fewer than certified high-grade pieces of the 1911-D. Much of the reason for this is that the 1914-D "may well be the worst struck Indian Head Quarter Eagle," according to Michael Fuljenz in his 2010 reference, Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century. The present piece is crisply struck, however, and only thorough examination reveals a few tiny areas of softness within the headdress. The lustrous lemon-gold surfaces are largely unabraded except for a couple of tiny ticks near the U in UNITED.
