    1914-D Quarter Eagle, Exceptional MS65
Among Four Top-Grade Examples at CAC

1914-D $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Big Sky Collection. The 1914-D quarter eagle is difficult to locate with clean surfaces, as it tends to be heavily abraded and show copper spots. The issue is usually found weakly struck, as well. Most Mint State examples to tend to cluster in the range from MS60 to MS63, and MS64 pieces are usually the finest seen. Gems are rare, and Premium Gems are virtually unknown.

The present Gem is a refreshing exception. The few minute marks on lustrous orange-gold surfaces are unobtrusive, and neither side reveals mentionable spotting. The design features are well-struck including the eagle's wing feathers, which are usually weak. The high eye appeal is appropriately recognized by CAC.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports 48 grading events in MS65 and none finer. NGC shows 43 pieces in Gem and one MS67 finer. This Gem is among the four finest pieces given the CAC sticker.

Heritage Commentary: Both David Akers and Michael Fuljenz call the 1914-D an important rarity in Gem or finer grades, one of the premier conditional keys in the entire series. Indian Head quarter eagle specialists will not want to miss out on this exceptional Gem.
