Description

1914-D Quarter Eagle, MS67
The Finest Known

1914-D $2 1/2 MS67 NGC. The Denver Mint produced Indian quarter eagles in 1911, 1914, and 1925, and those three issues were the only emissions at either branch mint as San Francisco did not produce the design. A significant mintage of 448,000 Indian Head quarter eagles was accomplished at the Denver Mint during 1914. Unfortunately, few examples were saved by collectors at the time of issue, and the date is quite rare today in higher Mint State grades. The true rarity of this date was not appreciated until recently, and many collectors still consider the coin a common issue. Examples

The present coin was cataloged by David Akers in his sale of the celebrated Thaine B. Price Collection. In his lot description, Akers comments: "Without question, this is my favorite quarter eagle in the Price Collection, and it is a coin that would be difficult, if not impossible to duplicate ... In fact, in my estimation, it is a strong candidate for the honor of being the finest known example of the issue."

While typical 1914-D quarter eagles are poorly produced, the present lustrous reddish-gold Superb Gem features a bold strike and trivial marks that are consistent with the grade. This is the finest existing 1914-D quarter eagle, and the only one at NGC or PCGS grading better than MS65 (11/24).
