Description

1929 Quarter Eagle, MS66
Just One Certified Finer

1929 $2 1/2 MS66 PCGS. The 1929 date was described in Garrett and Guth as "virtually unobtainable" in MS66 or MS67, and a quick check of our auction archives confirms the assessment with just four such appearances in the past 15+ years (only one in a PCGS holder). The 1929 date is always in demand as the last date of the Indian Head series and as the final year of the denomination.

This example is frosty and lustrous, with variegated orange-gold tones and lilac accents. While not fully struck, most of the devices are bold with only a few areas of weakness on the Indian's bonnet. The issue is known to be somewhat abraded even on high-grade pieces, but only a couple of tiny ticks are seen under magnification. This coin is an important condition rarity in Premium Gem and sure to elicit strong bids from series specialists. Population: 3 in 66, 1 finer (4/14).(Registry values: N4719)
