    1908 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR66
    Impeccable First-Year Matte Proof

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. JD-1, R.4. The deep, olive-gold color and sandblast matte finish of 1908 proof quarter eagles proved to be an acquired taste. The public had little interest in the unusual looking proofs, and the Mint suffered much criticism of the format. Between 1908 and 1915, the Mint experimented with different techniques and finishes for proof gold, but in 1908 only the oddly colored and decidedly unbrilliant matte proof surface prevailed. In 1915, proof coinage ceased altogether.

Today's collectors have an affinity for the distinctive 1908 proofs. 500 pieces were struck, of which 236 pieces were sold. The balance of the mintage was melted. Recent research by John W. Dannreuther suggests 100 to 120 pieces survive in all grades. This Premium Gem example displays the expected coarse, sandblast finish that tends to blur the fine details of Bela Lyon Pratt's design, yet there are no marks of post-Mint origin on this exceedingly well-preserved coin. Census: 36 in 66, 33 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N7079)
