1908 Matte Proof Quarter Eagle, PR66
    Popular First-Year Issue

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The 1908 quarter eagle was the first year of issue for Bela Pratt's radically new reduced relief for this and the half eagle denominations. The mintage was an impressively high (by previous proof standards) 236 pieces, many of which were ordered as novelties as the first of their kind. When these proofs were received by collectors the controversy began. The Mint employed the European method of matte proofing, rather than the traditional brilliant proofing. This piece has the usual deeper color and larger granules common to 1908 matte proofs. This piece has more reddish color than the usual greenish tinge. We do not see any noticeable contact marks or shiny spots, and each side is surrounded by a pronounced wire rim.(Registry values: N7079)
