    Description

    1908 Quarter Eagle, Well-Preserved PR66
    Struck With a Matte Texture

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The 1908 Indian quarter eagle proofs were struck with a heavy, coarse-grain, matte or sandblast texture. Despite the fact that this type of finish was unpopular among contemporary collectors, they were apparently saved as novelties by both collectors and non-collectors due to the first-year-of-issue. Indeed, NGC and PCGS have graded about 225 specimens, a figure approaching the 236 coins reported struck! Many certified coins are resubmissions as at least one-third of the original mintage was melted as unsold at the end of the year.

Our PR66 offering displays the deep khaki-gold coloration most often seen on these coins. The design elements are well-struck and both sides have been very well cared for. This last factor is extremely important because when distractions are present on this type of finish they often appear as shiny spots which can be quite distracting. Census: 37 in 66, 31 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N7079)
