    1908 Two and a Half, PR66
    Needle-Sharp, Matte Finish Example

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The sunken-relief details of this textured Sandblast Proof are outstanding, as are the smoothly stippled fields surrounding the deeply impressed devices. As the first year of the controversial matte finish and the Indian Head design, several high-grade proofs were saved by collectors. In general, the public disliked the new matte finish and never did embrace the format. Today, the proofs are highly valued as examples both of the date and the style.

This attractive Premium Gem is deeply toned and displays the khaki-gold coloration typical of the matte finish proof format. The surfaces are wholly unreflective and softly lustrous by design. This example appears completely free of blemishes or bright spots that would indicate any contact marks. Census: 37 in 66, 31 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N7079)
