    1910 Quarter Eagle, PR66
Just Two Examples Finer at PCGS

1910 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. The public was not enamored with the Mint's attempt at a brighter, non-matte finish for its proof gold coinage. The new finish was introduced in 1909 when just 136 proofs were struck. Inexplicably, the Mint responded in 1910 by striking a record number of proofs (682 pieces, according to Mint records) with the same "Roman" gold finish. Again, the public demurred, and numerous unsold proofs were either melted or released into circulation, depending on whose research is believed. Perhaps the Mint record itself is incorrect, since the number of surviving pieces suggests a much smaller mintage.

While much research remains to be done about the actual number of proofs struck, sold, or otherwise dispersed, the population data suggests somewhere around 200 pieces survive today in all grades. This example is a bright yellow-gold example with satiny texture and a pinpoint sharp strike. PCGS has seen just two numerically finer examples. Population: 11 in 66, 2 finer (12/17).
