    Description

    1911 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR66
    Sandblast Finish

1911 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. In the context of the series, the 1911 proof Indian quarter eagle is a reasonably available issue, but still not as easy to locate as the recorded mintage of 191 pieces would suggest. It is likely that some coins went unsold, and were melted after the end of the year. Since the bright finish used on gold proofs in 1909 and 1910 (called Roman Gold by Walter Breen) failed to gain acceptance among contemporary collectors, the Mint reverted to a type of sandblast finish in 1911, but with a lighter, finer-grained surface than the coins of 1908.

The present coin is a delightful Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and impeccably preserved orange-gold surfaces that show the typical matte luster characteristics of this issue. Population: 16 in 66 (1 in 66+), 19 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N7079)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 289K, PCGS# 7960)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
