    1912 PR66 Quarter Eagle
    Deeper Finish, Fully Struck Throughout

1912 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The 1912 matte proof finish is usually expected to be lighter, almost yellow-gold. However, on this piece the surfaces are much deeper in hue, almost brown-gold. What is consistent, however, with every 1912 we have examined across all four denominations of matte proofs are the tiny granules of the matte finish. Magnification is such a great aid for matte proof gold as it shows the individual sparkling facets of the finish to best effect. The 1912 is one of the scarcer issues in the series. Of the 197 pieces struck, it is estimated that today only 60-75 coins still exist in all grades. Close examination of this coin reveals a few shallow luster grazes and shiny spots. The strike is complete in all areas, as one would expect from a proof. Census: 25 in 66, 10 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N7079)
