    Description

    1912 Quarter Eagle, PR66
    Challenging Any Finer

1912 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. Garrett and Guth note the ever-changing nature of finishes among proof Indian quarter eagles, writing of the 1912 that examples "show a fine sandblast texture, which reflects the light with ... microscopic facets." (This in comparison to the dark matte appearance of the 1911.) This PR66 representative is primarily honey-gold with a smooth satin appearances and a few tiny frosty breaks at the highest parts of the design. Despite a published mintage of 197 specimens, Garrett and Guth consider it "one of the scarcest of the Proof issues ... nearly tied in overall rarity with the 1913 and 1915 Proofs according to the population data." NGC has graded just nine numerically finer examples (11/13).(Registry values: N7079)
