    1912 Quarter Eagle, PR66+
    Magnificent Matte Proof

1912 $2 1/2 PR66+ PCGS Secure. CAC. Quarter eagles are the smallest gold denomination regularly issued as matte proofs, for the gold dollar last was struck in 1889, well before the intentionally dulled surfaces and razor-sharp detail "look" came into vogue. This impressively preserved example of the 1912 matte proof two and a half has a rich orange-gold character and crisp all-around detail. Remarkably undisturbed fields show only a few tiny suggestions of coppery alloy and the all-around eye appeal is excellent. A wonderful coin to own, albeit difficult to pedigree. Population: 7 in 66+, 3 finer (8/13).
