Premium Gem Proof 1914 Quarter Eagle
    Unusually Clean Fields

1914 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The Mint continued to experiment with different matte proof or sandblast finishes in 1914 in an effort to appease collectors who continued to prefer the brilliant finishes of earlier years. For 1914, a sandblast finish with coarser texture than the 1912 and 1913 issues was attempted. The granular surfaces were darker and less reflective than their immediate predecessors, and proved even less popular. Only 117 proof quarter eagles were struck in 1914, and it is likely that many specimens went unsold and were melted after the end of the year.
The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and pristine olive-gold surfaces. The unmarked fields are especially attractive, as this issue is usually found with many wispy contact marks. This coin would be a welcome addition to a fine collection of Indian quarter eagles. Census: 6 in 66, 16 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N7079)
