Description
Pair of Eagle Mining Co. Silver Ingots
Eagle Mining Co. Silver Ingots. The Eagle Mining Co. ingots first surfaced in about 1969. Much has been said of these ingots, some real, and some quite inventive. There are interesting attributes in common to all the Eagle ingots. They are all the product of refining, 999 fine. Each is not consistently marked in the same manner, with fineness in one place, serial number and value in another. Further, the word "value" is used, which is redundant when a dollar sign is present. It is only rarely used, generally in the case of a dore' ingot with mixed gold and silver, and generally for exhibition ingots. The eagle used in the vignette is strikingly similar to, and apparently patterned after, the post-WW II U.S. Mint ingots, a commonality far too striking to be ignored. These ingots possess common attributes that can only result in a single conclusion, that they were made for the bullion market, probably after the demonetization of silver in 1964. They were, and continue to be, very collectible precious metal ingots.
Mining company ingots are generally not refined. They are dore, a natural bullion product from the mine, carrying the gold and silver (and sometimes copper, antimony, etc.) as it is found in nature at the mine. In this case, the reference to "Mining Co." is possibly an early marketing ploy.
