Description
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot Faceplate
10.58 Ounces Actual Weight
Ex: S.S. Central America
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot Faceplate. 10.58 Ounces (actual
weight). CAGB-590. Kellogg & Humbert was one of the most
prolific and respected private assay firms in San Francisco during
the Gold Rush, and the massive quantity of their ingots recovered
from the S.S. Central America bears this out. Of the more
than 370 ingots recovered from this assayer, 69 were melted so the
gold could be used to strike proof commemorative Kellogg & Humbert
"restrike" fifty dollar "slugs."This ingot, serial number 783, was among those, such that what is offered here is the preserved faceplate. The original ingot was a member of the Very Large Size weight class (100.01 to 300.00 ounces), and had an original stamped weight of 131.40 ounces. It was poured into Mold K&H-04 (55 mm x 111 mm). The face plate stamps are laid out vertically: No. 783 / (company hallmark) / 131.40 OZ / 856 FINE / $2,325.13. The original ingot had the serial number repeated on the back side, although the back of the current face plate is sheared and smoothed. The faceplate is approximately 3.5 mm thick. Bright yellow-gold surfaces gleam in-hand and lack any notable marks. The faceplate is accompanied by a copy of Q. David Bowers' A California Gold Rush History, the edition with a black cover and no inset gold grains.
