Description

Interesting 23.18 Ounce Silver San Francisco Mint Ingot

San Francisco Mint 23.18 Ounce Silver Ingot. This curious ingot has the oval San Francisco Mint imprint double-punched at the top of the front of the ingot. The oval punch indicates this was produced sometime between the 1940s and at least 1964. Beneath the oval punch is the individual ingot number 457 in a large font. In a much smaller font below the ingot number is 999.75 FINE. On the short bottom side is the number 178. Another curious mispunching occurs on the back side. 23.18 is on one line. Beneath is OZS. However, the OZS stamp was first impressed upside-down so it reads OZSO. Deep blue-gray patination covers all the surfaces. The ingot measures 52 x 77 x 17 mm.
