San Francisco Mint 5.42-Ounce Silver Ingot
Type One Hallmark, Straight Stem 9s
San Francisco Mint Type One Oval Hallmark Silver Ingot. 5.42
Ounces. This oval hallmark has a serif font and small
lettering. The surfaces are nicely laid out, but appear to have
been cleaned at one time. The straight stem 9s indicate a casting
period from the early 1940s. The hallmark is just off the left side
/ the number 278 is immediately below / 999.5 / FINE. Only the
lower, short side has an imprint, the number 8. The lower third of
the back side shows 5.42 / OZS. Ken Conaway commented about this
ingot:"The Type One Oval Hallmark, small font, straight stem 9s in 999.5 type is one of the scarcest varieties in the 5-ounce class ingots from the San Francisco Mint. In seven years of research I have only seen five ingots from this particular series. Of the five, three are from Lot #7, and this makes only the second ingot from Lot #8 in this series."
