Description

Milan - Carolingian. Louis the Pious (814-40) Denier 819-22 MS64 NGC, Milan mint, MEC-787, MG-451, Dep-662I. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP, cross pattée in beaded circle / MEDIO • LANVM, city name in two lines with a pellet between. Struck ever-so-slightly off center, this relic of Carolingian expansion south across the Alps exhibits remarkable original surfaces, lustrous and beautifully toned in warm iridescence. A small portion of the outer beaded edge veers off-flan, particularly noticeable on the obverse, but this is not uncommon and examples in this state of preservation are downright rare. Certainly among the finest extant examples of this issue and a true prize for the connoisseur of the Carolingian series.
