Description

Venice - Carolingian. Louis the Pious (814-40) Denier 819-22 AU55 PCGS, Venice mint, MEC-789, MG-456, Dep-1116D. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP, cross pattée in beaded circle / + VENECIAS, city name in two lines. A lovely example of this rare type, sharply struck with near-perfect centering. The surfaces exhibit very light tone and retain much luster. There is some debate as to whether the Carolingians ever truly held Venice or whether this was something of a propaganda issue. In either case, this is a fascinating specimen recalling Carolingian expansion into northern Italy.
