Description
Gordon Plate Coin Counterstamped Doubloon
British Colony. George II gold Counterstamped 5 Pounds
(Doubloon) ND (1758) XF40 NGC, KM11.4, Prid-1, Gordon-1 (this
coin). Floriate "GR" within circular indent Counterstamp (XF
Strong) on Peru 8 Escudos 1759 LM-JM [counterstamp on either face].
Iconic West Indies type, of which just around 10 specimens are
confirmed to us today. The type is linked to the Act of 18 November
1757, which required gold and silver coins to be countermarked to
be made legal tender at a fixed value. The example at hand bears
strong counterstamps and a deep plum patina that augments the
visual appeal in hand. A strong continuation of the Jamaican
counterstamped items offered in this auction.Metal: Gold
