Ex: Farouk Collection Gold 10 Yen Pattern Rarity Meiji 3 (1870)

Meiji gold Pattern 10 Yen Year 3 (1870), large flan, Dragon within beaded circle, legend around/Sunburst flanked by banners with chrysanthemum above, KM-Pn19, J&V Ma1, MS64 NGC. Full mint brilliance, with nicely reflective surfaces, and a few minor marks. An extreme rarity, and possibly, the first to be offered at public auction.

This type was originally intended for general issue. It was included, in this size, in the New Coinage Act. It was decided that to produce the coin in this size would cause problems because of the decreased thickness of the coin. Because of this, the smaller diameter, thicker coin, with identical weight was produced dated Meiji 4. We known of only three examples of this Pattern-one in the Bank of Japan collection, one in the British Museum, and this piece. This particular coin is Ex: Farouk Palace Collection sale 1954, Lot 1369. The London dealer, Baldwin's, bought this piece from the Farouk sale and subsequently sold it to Norman Jacobs.
