Ron Guth, writing for PCGS CoinFacts, the 1939-S Reverse of 1940 is
generally much more elusive than its Reverse of 1938 counterpart
with less-defined steps. The issue is a significant condition
rarity in Superb Gem, where this coin is tied with two others at
PCGS for finest known (7/19). Wisps of golden color complement
satiny nickel-gray surfaces practically devoid of marks, except for
