Description

1942-D Nickel, MS62 Five Full Steps
D Over Horizontal D Variety

1942-D 5C D Over Horizontal D, FS-501, MS62 Full Steps NGC. Of all the major Jefferson nickel varieties, the 1942-D Over Horizontal D is the rarest in Mint State grades. The mintmark was errantly entered into the die at a 90 degree rotation and then corrected, creating this unusual Guide Book curiosity. Satiny luster yields to pale lavender-gold toning on each side of this Full Steps coin, while the strike is bold throughout. The surfaces are unusually well-preserved for the grade level, showing no obtrusive abrasions.
Ex: Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2014), lot 3308, which realized $2,585.
