Description

1942 D Over Horizontal D Nickel
MS65, FS-501

1942-D 5C D Over Horizontal D MS65 PCGS. FS-501. According to the Cherrypickers' Guide, the 1942 D over Horizontal D "is the rarest of the major Jefferson nickel varieties in Mint State." As with the 1942/1 and 1942/1-D dimes and the 1943/2-P nickel, the error was presumably struck after experienced mint workers entered military service. The present almond-gold and gunmetal-gray example is lustrous and nicely struck. Smooth save for a single slender mark near the dome of Monticello. Population: 6 in 65, 1 finer (10/13).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 4015, Greysheet# 3236)

Weight: 5.00 grams

Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel, 9% Manganese
