Description

    1942-D/D Jefferson Nickel, FS-501
Series Key, Sole MS66 at PCGS

1942-D 5C D Over Horizontal D MS66 PCGS. FS-501. The Cherrypickers' Guide rates the FS-501 1942-D/D as the rarest major Jefferson nickel variety in Mint State, and the Bowers series reference comments that it is "very rare, even a worn example would be a prize." This Premium Gem example is the sole finest graded FS-501 at PCGS, which shows a total of 20 submissions in all Mint State grades combined. The PCGS Price Guide gives a retail price of $8,500 for an MS65 but the variety is unpriced in MS66 -- unsurprisingly, as we can find no record of a public trade at this grade level. This piece is essentially unmarked and show light pinkish-gold patina complementing generous luster. Most of the steps are visible, even though there is a small bridge just past the halfway point.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 22TL, PCGS# 4015)
